The Nature Sanctuary

A Delicate Balance

Every day, the Earth performs a delicate balancing act involving the elements, climate, environment, and many other factors in order to maintain the health of its ecosystems and the creatures that call it home. Here in Cape Breton, the Canadian Boreal and Acadian forests are under attack from all sides: indiscriminate logging, environmental pollution, the expansion of cities and suburban areas, the impact of ATV and snowmobile trails, hunting and fishing. All these, and many other, human activities contribute to the erosion and destruction of essential habitat for the countless beings (both flora and fauna) that live in our beautiful Highlands.

An Island of Tranquility

Here at Avalon Pagan Centre, we are very lucky to have found an off-grid home which literally backs onto a provincially protected wilderness area. We also have Crown land on our southern border. Between these lands, and our own privately owned acreage, we find ourselves in the middle of an island of tranquility. We are miles from the nearest street light. Our woodlands and gardens have never known a drop of chemical fertilizer or pesticide. Deer, black bear and moose are free to roam here, without fear of a hunter’s bullet or a logging harvester.

Leave only Footprints

What can you do here at the Nature Sanctuary? First, register to join Avalon Pagan Centre. Then, you can come out to one of our guided trail hikes, maybe come for a snowshoe, or just drop in to a Potluck Open House to meet us and see what it’s all about. Then, you’ll be able to come out whenever you like to camp, hike, take photos, bird watch, or just sit and meditate beside a stream. As the saying goes, leave only footprints, and take only photographs.

Volunteers & Donations Welcome

The Nature Sanctuary at Avalon Pagan Centre is unofficial and does not receive any government funding or assistance. We are just two people with a passion for nature, doing our best to provide and maintain a peaceful, unspoiled natural environment for the wildlife in our area. As more and more habitat is destroyed, this becomes a critical duty and responsibility. As forest stewards, we appreciate any help that you can give, whether it be your time, through volunteer assistance or work barter, or a monetary donation.
